Duke proves too much for Temple

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Temple couldn't make it two in a row against perhaps the biggest bully in college basketball.

The second-ranked Duke Blue Devils crushed the Owls, 90-67, on Saturday at the IZOD Center, a year after Temple upset Duke at the Wells Fargo Center.

Duke (9-0) holds a 19-10 series lead. Temple (6-1) hasn't won consecutive games over the Blue Devils since 1949-50.

This time around, Duke had the perfect game plan: Stop Khalif Wyatt and Scootie Randall.

Wyatt was held to six points on 3-for-15 shooting. The 6-foot-4 senior guard torched Duke for a game-high 22 points last season.

Randall, who missed last season as a redshirt, also struggled on Saturday. The 6-6 fifth-year senior swingman shot 3 of 9 from the field to also finish with six points.

"With Wyatt, it's make it hard to catch it," Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski said of his game plan. "Try to get him a little bit further out on the court, and not reach to his fakes."

The Blue Devils had a similar game plan for Randall.

"It wasn't as comfortable," Krzyzewski said. "If you do that for one day, the next time we play them, they might go for 20 and 20. But for today, it was just a little bit different."

In addition to shutting down Temple's best players, Duke had a 19-to-6 assists-to-turnovers ratio, shot 60 percent (12 for 20) on three-pointers and had a balanced attack.

"They have a talented group of guys," Randall said. "So they were able to get their shots and able to knot them down when they needed to."

Seth Curry made five three-pointers for Duke to lead all scorers with 23 points. The senior guard's biggest points came shortly after Temple pulled within 12 points with 6 minutes, 37 seconds remaining.

After a Mason Plumlee foul shot, Curry went on a personal 7-0 run to make it an 80-60 contest with 3:38 left.

Forwards Plumlee (16 points and 14 rebounds) and Ryan Kelly (14 points and 10 rebounds) and guard Quinn Cook (14 points and three steals) were Duke's other double-digit scorers.

Reserve freshman guard Quenton DeCosey led Temple with 13 points.

"I think we were a little bit scared early," Temple coach Fran Dunphy said. "I think we got some nervousness going for us early that put us on our heels a little bit."
