So, when was the last time two Big 5 coaches were up for national honors in the same year?
Well, Temple's Fran Dunphy and Villanova's Jay Wright are two of the 15 finalists for this season's Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award.
Named in honor of the longtime Mount St. Mary's coach and Philadelphia native, the award is voted on by a 20-member panel. The winner will be presented at the Final Four next month in Indianapolis.
Saint Joseph's Phil Martelli was the 2004 recipient.
Wright won three national awards in 2006. Dunphy was just named the top coach in the Atlantic 10.
Among the other finalists are Cornell's Steve Donahue, who assisted Dunphy at Penn for many years, and Richmond's Chris Mooney, who played at Archbishop Ryan. *
