Ball State update: David Letterman's team has lost seven straight, after starting 2008 12-0 . . . Cards, under first-year coach Stan Parrish, lost last week at home to Toledo, 37-30, by giving up 23 fourth-quarter points . . . Senior co-captain Brandon Crawford, a former Marine who turned 33 in August, starts at DE. He's older than five of the team's assistant coaches.

Temple update: Owls, coming off 24-12 win at Eastern Michigan, are playing their second straight winless opponent . . . They're 8-2 at home in MAC, having won last five . . . Special teams left a lot to be desired last week . . . Vaughn Charlton is 49-for-96 for 740 yards, four TDs, with four interceptions . . . Next week the Owls host Army.

Villanova update: Wildcats, ranked No. 2 in FCS, beat then-No. 5 William & Mary at home, 28-17 . . . First game outside Philly . . . Next week Wildcats are at No. 12 James Madison, which beat them twice last year.

New Hampshire update: These 'Cats, who moved up to No. 5, have FCS's No. 3 defense. They have forced 18 turnovers; had 6 INTs in last week's 57-7 win at Towson; 30 first-period points scored were their most in any quarter since 1975 . . . They have scored 71 of 148 points in opening 15 minutes . . . Won at FBS Ball State . . . QB R.J. Toman has a turf toe.

Penn update: Quakers are coming off 30-24 win at Dartmouth. This is their final non-Ivy game . . . Injuries will force them to start fourth-string quarterback John Hurley, a sophomore who has never taken a varsity snap . . . Have gone 16 games without allowing a 100-yard rusher . . . Lead FCS in fewest penalties per game (2.67) and penalty yardage (82) . . . Freshman Lyle Marsh rushed for 120 yards on 23 carries last week . . . Next week they're at Columbia.
