Owls to play at Kansas next season

Once again, Temple's basketball team will play the defending national champion next season.

The Owls, who traveled to Florida last December, will be at Kansas and historic Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 20 as part of a two-game trip that also includes a stop at Long Beach 2 nights later. In 2009-10, the Jayhawks will come to the Wachovia Center.

"This is a great opportunity to play a series against one of the top programs in the nation," said Temple coach Fran Dunphy, whose team made it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001, in his second season on North Broad Street. "It also allows us to bring a quality team to Philadelphia the following season."

Tennessee, which made it to No. 1 for the first time last season, visits the Liacouras Center this season. Temple opened the season in Knoxville last November.

The Owls have lost five of eight meetings with Kansas. But they won the last two, in 1993 at Allen and 2 years later at the Meadowlands, when Kansas was No. 1. *

Dick Polman: Let's try to guess whom John McCain picks as his running mate. It's fun to speculate - even though, if history is any guide, we'll probably all be wrong.

Still, we can learn a lot about McCain's candidacy, and the daunting challenges that he faces, simply by playing the veepstakes.

For starters, we probably should excise the candidates McCain reportedly covets the most. Tom Ridge, for instance. McCain really likes the guy, by all accounts.
