Maryland escaped with a 36-27 victory over Temple on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field.
The Owls (1-1) nearly battled back from a 23-point first-half deficit.
Temple quarterback Chris Coyer completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Fitzpatrick to close the gap to 29-27 with 7:04 seconds left.
But Maryland quarterback Perry Hills responded with 38-yard pass to Stephon Diggs to the Temple 13-yard line. Three plays later, Justus Pickett scored a 7-yard touchdown run to extend Maryland’s lead to nine points with 2:51 left.
On the ensuing possession, Coyer’s fourth-down pass was intercepted by Demetrius Hartsfield.
The junior completed 7 of 18 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns in the setback.
Maryland improved to 2-0.
