Bembry boosts St. Joe's past Boston U.

Maybe St. Joseph's coach Phil Martelli will ask assistant Dave Duda to speak to DeAndre Bembry before every game.

Martelli benched an ineffective Bembry early in the second half of Sunday's game against Boston University. After some motivating words for Bembry, Duda convinced Martelli to put the freshman back in.

Bembry responded in a big way, scoring nine of his 11 points during a crucial three-minute second-half stretch as the Hawks earned a 73-67 victory over Boston University at Hagan Arena.

"Had to get him out," Martelli said. "He was just not guarding."

Bembry had just two points in 14 minutes before he was pulled with 16 minutes, 23 seconds remaining and St. Joe's down, 43-34. Just over five minutes later, he reentered with a new mind-set.

"I was frustrated with myself as far as getting rebounds and playing defense," Bembry said. "I just tried to calm down and play regular basketball, come in and make my presence known and do certain little things on defense, rebound and stuff like that."

And Duda's advice?

"He was just talking to me about calming down, being aggressive, knowing when to be aggressive," Bembry said.

The Hawks were down, 54-47, with 8:44 left before scoring 12 straight points over the next 3:04 to go in front by 59-54 with 5:40 remaining. Bembry scored nine of the 12 points.

Ronald Roberts and Chris Wilson led the Hawks with 19 points apiece. Langston Galloway also reached double figures with 16 for the Hawks (7-4), who won their third straight.

The Terriers (7-6) feature four players with Philadelphia ties.

Maurice Watson Jr. (Boys' Latin) led BU with 21 points, and Dom Morris (Friends' Central) had 11. D.J. Irving (Archbishop Carroll) scored five. The Terriers' other Philly player, Travis Robinson (Friends' Central), had three points.
