Former Saint Joseph's basketball player Petrovic dies in Serbia

Former Saint Joseph's basketball player Nemanja Petrovic passed away this week in his native Serbia. He would have been 35 next month.

After being hospitalized with an illness about a week ago, Petrovic suffered from what eventually became a viral infection affecting his lungs and heart.

"Nemanja was a young man who fully seized the opportunity provided at Saint Joseph's," coach Phil Martelli said. "An outstanding student, a great teammate and a proud graduate, he will be missed."

Petrovic was a senior on the 1997 Hawks team that reached the NCAA Sweet 16 after winning the Atlantic 10 championship. During that season, the 6-10 center averaged 6.9 points and 5.2 rebounds.

Funeral arrangements were not available. *
