Rutledge not enrolling at Saint Joseph's

Dominic Rutledge was the kind of recruit that Saint Joseph's was really happy to get last fall - a power forward with great athleticism, a potential difference-maker. Well, the 6-7 Rutledge, from Edison (N.J.) Job Corps Academy, won't be making a difference for St. Joe's next season.

"There would be some [NCAA] Clearinghouse issues,'' St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli said. "There are some admissible issues at St. Joe's. Rather than get involved, we have encouraged him to go to junior college. It's one of those situations that even a prep school thing isn't going to fix it . . . After careful consideration, he was not going to be admissible under the St. Joe standards.''

St. Francis interviews Bass

St. Joe's assistant Mark Bass has interviewed for the vacant head-coaching job at St. Francis (Pa.). Bass, Martelli's longest-tenured assistant, has gotten several feelers about head jobs in recent years. *

The name of the cigar store in Bordentown, Ashes to Ashes, has never seemed more apropos than on this weekend afternoon. Joseph Tittel is opening a portal between the living and the dead.

About 30 people have paid Tittel $45 each in the hopes of hearing from their dearly departed. Tittel, a rising local medium, is their pipeline to the afterlife. He is self-taught and unpolished, but he is gaining droves of followers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
