St. Joe's (2-1) won Saturday at America East favorite Boston University, 57-48. The Hawks trailed after 11 minutes 15-8. Twenty minutes later, they led 49-33. So the half a game of 41-18 was pretty good.
Prior to the game, Hawks coach Phil Martelli said he figured his team's size would eventually get BU. Ahmad Nivins had 18 points and 13 rebounds as the Hawks, at times, played volleyball on the glass. The shooting of Darrin Govens (15 points) got the Hawks their big second-half lead.
This, however, was not a game for shooting. The teams combined to shoot 4-for-32 from the three-point line. BU shot just 37.3 percent overall.
La Salle (1-1) won 66-63 at Mount St. Mary's. The Explorers had four players in double figures and shot 16-for-18 from the foul line. They also committed 22 turnovers and had just seven assists.

Howard head coach Gil Jackson was a Penn assistant for 16 years before going to Washington for his first head job. Jackson's team hosts La Salle tomorrow and then will be back at the Palestra Friday to play Loyola in the opener of the afternoon Philly Classic doubleheader. Penn plays The Citadel tomorrow at the Palestra. The Quakers play in Friday's last of four games in the Classic. They get Virginia, which did beat Howard by 39 and, Saturday, won at Arizona. *
