Penn State cornerback Da'Quan Davis has been dismissed from the team by head coach James Franklin in the wake of the player's May 9 arrest by university police on drug and underage drinking charges.

According to Centre County Court documents filed Monday, Davis, 20, of Rosedale, Md., was charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana for personal use along with use/possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors. He also was cited for buying alcohol as a minor, a summary offense.

Penn State Police Chief Tyrone Parham said officers responded to a fire alarm at an on-campus apartment complex at 4 a.m. May 9. When police entered, no one was inside the apartment, but officers found a hookah pipe, which set off the fire alarm and smelled like marijuana.

On a kitchen table, police found green plant residue that resembled marijuana, and officers obtained a search warrant for the residence, Parham said. The search turned up a small baggie of marijuana, blunt cigars, and some alcohol, according to the chief.

Davis was the only resident of the apartment at the time, Parham said.

Davis, who will be a senior in the fall, faces a preliminary hearing June 24 before District Judge Carmine W. Prestia Jr.

When asked about Davis on Wednesday at the New York stop of the Penn State coaches caravan, Franklin said only that the player was no longer with the team. He released a statement later in the day.

"Da'Quan Davis is no longer a member of the Penn State football team due to a violation of team rules," he said. "We appreciate Da'Quan's contributions to the program and wish him success in the future."

Davis remains enrolled at Penn State.

The 5-foot-10, 174-pound Davis played in 11 games in his freshman year with the Nittany Lions. He saw action in just seven games in 2013 and six games last season. He accounted for 13 tackles in his career, three last season.
