Penn State coach Bill O'Brien called wide receiver Devon Smith "a guy that I believe in" but did not say Monday whether there could be any punishment for the senior, who has been charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana.

The 5-foot-7 Smith, who missed much of spring practice after suffering a sprained left foot, was charged Saturday by Penn State police more than six weeks after police searched his apartment.

According to police, the March 14 search turned up a plastic bag believed to hold marijuana, a scale, a grinder believed to be used to cut marijuana, and "multiple blunts."

O'Brien, speaking during the Penn State coaches' caravan stop in Drexel Hill, said he learned Friday night that charges would be filed.

"Devon's a good kid," he said. "He's a guy that's been around for a long time and he's a guy that I believe in. Any punishment that takes place between Devon and the football program will be between Devon and myself.

". . . He'll have to appear in court, I'm sure, on a certain date, and we'll let the process play out from there."
