Guess we'll all have to wait to see who runs out onto the field to take the first snap.
The Penn State office of sports information released its Week 1 depth chart yesterday afternoon, and it reflects the tight battles being waged for several starting positions. One of those, not unexpectedly, is at quarterback, between senior Daryll Clark and redshirt sophomore Pat Devlin. Coach Joe Paterno has not publicly desigated a starter.
Another position that remains up for grabs is right cornerback, where neither senior Lydell Sargeant nor junior A.J. Wallace has separated himself from the other to this point.
But there are some mild surprises elsewhere in the lineup. Junior Jared Odrick, the starter at defensive left tackle until he dislocated his right ankle in the Indiana game last Oct. 20, is fully recovered but was unable to fend off redshirt sophomore Abe Koroma, who also missed significant time with injuries a year ago. Koroma made his first career start in the Alamo Bowl victory over Texas A & M and opens the new season ahead of Odrick.
Others who rode strong fall practices to spots on the first unit include Bani Gbadyu at outside linebacker, where he'll start ahead of fellow redshirt sophomore Navorro Bowman, and redshirt junior tight end Mickey Shuler, who has displaced junior Andrew Quarless. Until further notice, Quarless, a starter as a freshman who began the 2007 on the John Mackey watch list for potential All-America tight ends, is behind not only Shuler, but redshirt freshman Andrew Szczerba. *
