Quakers new quarterback Will Fischer-Colbrie could be most important piece

Penn opens its season Saturday afternoon against Division II Ohio Dominican (0-2) at Franklin Field. Here are some Quakers to keep an eye out for this year.

Most outstanding offensive player – It had better be senior wide receiver Justin Watson, who might be the best offensive player in the Ivy League. At times, he can't be  contained. But the most important guy in the Quakers attack might turn out new quarterback Will Fischer-Colbrie. That's something they haven't had to worry about the last two years with Alek Torgersen.

Most outstanding defensive player – Senior end Louis Vecchio was a first-team all-Ivy selection who had a team-high 10.5 tackles for losses and 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three pass breakups. But linebacker Colton Moskal and defensive back Sam Philippi, who's only a junior, are both good enough to give him a run for that designation.

Most outstanding freshman – Georgia native Isaiah Malcome is listed as a running back but figures to make more of an impact for now as a kick returner. The coaches like his speed and compare him favorable with Darren Sproles, which is obviously setting a high bar.

Chalk – The game at Harvard on Nov. 11 will decide the title. Princeton should still be very much of a factor despite the loss of quarterback John Lovett, who was the Ivy's most oustanding offensive player a year ago, to a shoulder injury. But without him, it might be asking a little too much.

Shocker – The Quakers win at Lehigh in Week 2 and go unbeaten, which is something they haven't done since 2003 (and only once since 1993). That was also the last time they won in Bethlehem, Pa. That would also mean they'd have to beat Harvard for a third straight time, and second in a row up there. The last time they beat Harvard back-to-back-to-back was 1998-2000. The last time they won consecutively in Boston was 1993 and '95.
