Penn women advance to Ivy lacrosse title game

Catherine Dickinson's hat trick propels the Quakers into third straight championship matchup, where they'll play Princeton

JUNIOR ATTACKER Catherine Dickinson scored a hat trick - with three goals in the first half - to help lift Penn's women's lacrosse team into the finals of the Ivy League championship yesterday with a 7-6 win over Cornell at Princeton's Sherrerd Field at the Class of 1952 Stadium.

The two-time defending Ivy champion Quakers (13-3) will face Princeton in the final tomorrow at 11 a.m. The game will be televised on The Comcast Network. The top-seeded Tigers (13-3) advanced with a 15-8 victory in the nightcap. The winner earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Overall, Penn is seeking its fourth Ivy League Tournament championship and its 11th league title overall.

Junior midfielder Nina Corcoran added two goals in the victory for the No. 2-seeded Quakers.

Tory Benson, named earlier in the week as the Ivy League attacker of the year, scored one goald for the Quakers, her 47th tally of the season, as did Lely DeSimone.

Goalkeeper Lucy Ferguson, who was named first-team All-Ivy for the third consecutive season, made nine saves against the third-seeded Big Red (9-6).

Ferguson had several key stops for the Quakers. With 18:43 to play in the second half, defender Meg Markham was issued her second yellow card of the game for a check to the head. In the ensuing man advantage, Ferguson made a save on Amie Dickson. A score by Emily Tripodi on the rebound was disallowed when she was ruled to be in the crease.

With less than a minute in the game and the Quakers holding a one-goal lead, Amie Dickson flung one final shot on goal with 0:11 to play and Ferguson got her turned her aside.
