No. 1 Maryland ends Penn's run in women's lacrosse

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The season came to an end for Penn on Sunday in a 13-5 loss to No. 1 Maryland in the second round of the NCAA women's lacrosse tournament at Maryland's field hockey and lacrosse complex.

Penn struck first on a goal by senior midfielder Lindsey Smith, a former Unionville High star, less than five minutes into the game, but Maryland's relentless attack proved to be too much.

Taylor Cummings, Beth Glaros, and Kelly McPartland scored hat tricks for the Terrapins (20-1), who also beat the Quakers, 15-5, in March.

"I felt [Maryland] had to work harder for goals today than the first time we played them," Penn coach Karin Corbett said. "I'm just really proud of my team for how they fought for 60 minutes. They gave everything they had."

Maryland won 17 of 20 draw controls and outshot the Quakers, 28-12. Penn finished with a 13-5 record.

"You can't give a team like Maryland that many possessions," Corbett said. "When you lose the draw that much, it's like every shot matters."

The Quakers had a three-goal scorer of their own in senior midfielder Tory Bensen, who pushed her total to seven goals for this year's tournament.

"We would have liked to win," Bensen said, "but we're walking away with our heads high today, definitely."

Although Bensen is a senior, Penn's leading goal scorer this season has one more year of eligibility left and will return next spring.

Sophomore midfielder Nina Corcoran assisted on one of Bensen's goals and also scored one herself.
