Dan Monckton's buzzer-beating putback gave the Quakers a 55-54 win over Brown at the Pizzitola Center.
To many, the shot was released after the backboard light went on, but with no TV replay monitor available, the call stood and the Quakers ran off the floor celebrating.
For all but those final few milliseconds of the game, it looked as if Penn (2-14, 1-1 Ivy League) was en route to its second loss in as many league games. But after Brown's Tucker Halpern missed a free throw, the Quakers got the ball back with a chance to take their first lead since the game's opening minutes.
Penn guard Zack Rosen, who led all scorers in the game with 19 points, brought the ball up the floor and passed to an open Zack Gordon for a three. The shot was short, and fell to Monckton.
Monckton pushed up his shot as the backboard light went on, and the ball fell through the net well after the horn had sounded.
Referee Kevin Quirk took a moment to consider what he had just seen, then lowered his arm and put forth two fingers to signal that the basket counted.
"I couldn't see the red [light] from the side, so I thought it counted," Monckton said. "I was just going with what the refs said."
Monckton finished the game with 11 points. Forward Jack Eggleston tallied 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Penn coach Jerome Allen noted that Brown's Matt Mullery beat the buzzer at the end of the first half with a layup.
"I just think it's all a part of the game," Allen said. "Sometimes it goes in your favor and sometimes it doesn't."
To the naked eye, Mullery appeared to release his shot slightly earlier than Monckton did his. Both calls were close, though.
Brown coach Jesse Agel, who angrily confronted Quirk after the final buzzer, was not available for comment after the game. His team fell to 1-3 in Ivy League play and 7-14 overall with the loss.
