In the media poll, the Big Red were the unanimous choice after going 21-10 overall and 11-3 in the conference. The team returns three all-league players in forward Ryan Wittman, guard Louis Dale, and center Jeff Foote, who was the Ivy League's defensive player of the year. Chris Wroblewski, a guard, was the '09 rookie of the year.
"They're a very good team, and they've proven they can play both ends of the floor," Penn coach Glen Miller said. "For the league to be won by some other team than Cornell, it's going to take multiple teams to beat Cornell. We've improved, and other teams have improved also."
With Princeton coming in behind Cornell in the preseason rankings, Miller's squad was slotted third, followed by Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Brown, and Dartmouth.
Penn returns three starters in all-Ivy League guard Tyler Bernardini, point guard Zack Rosen, and forward Jack Eggleston. The Quakers will be bolstered by the size offered by 6-foot-9 forwards Andreas Schreiber (shoulder) and Mike Howlett (knee), who, due to injury, combined to play in only 12 games last season.
Plus, guard Darren Smith, who has not played since showing much promise as a freshman, is back after missing the last two seasons with knee injuries. Forward Larry Loughery (leg) is healthy after playing in only seven games last season.
Penn is coming off a 10-18 overall finish that included a 6-8 mark in the Ancient Eight.
"Our team to this point is making progress," Miller said. "We're further along this year than we were last year."
Miller has added former Penn great Jerome Allen to his coaching staff, and Rosen and Smith were elected by the team as captains.
