Penn's Carlin joins NCAA field

Penn's Jesse Carlin will join Villanova and La Salle athletes in representing the Big 5 at the NCAA track and field championships June 11-14 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Carlin won the women's 800 meters (2 minutes, 5.89 seconds) at the NCAA East Regional championship meet Saturday at Tallahassee, Fla., which automatically qualified her for the national championships.

Heading Villanova's NCAA group will be Bobby Curtis, upset winner over La Salle's top-seeded Sean Quigley in the 5,000 meters at the East Regional. Quigley, qualified in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter events, will run the longer distance at Drake, which is the event he'll also shoot for at the Olympic Trials (June 27-July 6, Eugene, Ore.).

Other Wildcats headed for Des Moines are Michael Kerrigan (1,500 meters), Marco Radocaj (javelin), and Frances Koons (5,000) and Liz Haglund (3,000 steeplechase).

Finally, La Salle's Rachel Papin is a provisional qualifier at 10,000 meters, but could also be added to the 5,000 field. That will be determined tomorrow. *
