Penn, 'Nova cited for academics

The University of Pennsylvania had 20 sports teams singled out by the NCAA for outstanding academic performance, it was announced yesterday.

Penn's teams were included among 712 squads nationwide recognized by the NCAA.

Yale produced the most impressive classroom performance for the second year in a row. Of the 29 men's and women's sports offered by the school and measured by the NCAA, the Bulldogs made the list in 28 sports.

Villanova's football team also was recognized.

The grades are calculated over a 4-year period but not including 2007-08.

Basketball powers Kansas and North Carolina also were represented among the 712 programs.

In other college news:

* Freshman guard Malcolm Grant has transferred from Villanova to Miami and will be eligible to play for the Hurricanes beginning in 2009-10.

* Alabama State basketball player Deshean Porchea, 19, collapsed and died after playing in a pickup game on campus.

* Missouri starters DeMarre Carroll and Leo Lyons declared for the NBA draft, though neither will hire an agent.

Olympics

* Athletes must refrain from any kind of political protests or messages at Olympic venues during the Beijing Games, an IOC panel representing athletes said.

* Katie Downing knocked off two-time world champion Kristie Marano at the semifinals of the U.S. national wrestling championships in Las Vegas. Marano, a nine-time world wrestling medalist, still qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials.
