Huskies too much for Quakers
Penn fell behind early and was never a factor in 37-point loss to Washington.
PENN HAD gotten to 3-0 in games averaging 68 possessions against teams with combined records of 0-10. It was a different game in Seattle against Washington Saturday. The very young, but very athletic and now 3-0 Huskies scored the game's first 16 points and never looked back winning, 104-67.
This game, with its 80 possessions, was played at way too hot a pace for the Quakers. Washington shot 51.3 percent from the field and got 1.3 points per possession. That was never an equation that was going to work for Penn which began the game 0-for-7 with four turnovers.
The trip west did give senior big man Darien Nelson-Henry a nice homecoming. And it only counts as one game, no matter the score. La Salle is next up Wednesday at the Palestra.
Winless Drexel
It is concerning that Drexel is 0-3 after losing at the DAC to Monmouth, 82-74. It is even more concerning that the Dragons have given up 82, 75 and 82 in the losses while being ranked 227th nationally in defensive efficiency. It is also true that Saint Joseph's, High Point and Monmouth are pretty good teams.
Monmouth (2-1) had won at UCLA and lost at USC. The Hawks trailed the Dragons by eight late in the first half before shooting 18-for-26 (69.2 percent) in the second half. Rashaan London had 20 points for Drexel, which plays Thursday in the Great Alaska Shootout.
Deceiving score
If you just saw the final score of St. Joe's 74-63 semifinal loss to Florida in the Hall of Fame Tipoff at Mohegan Sun, you might make an assumption about the game. The reality is that the Hawks played very well for almost 34 minutes and led 59-53 with 6 1/2 minutes left. The Gators, however, owned the final minutes as the Hawks did not finish, shooting just 1-for-9 from the field and 2-for-4 from the foul line down the stretch.
