Here are the winter-season players who excelled as students and athletes, as selected by the Philadelphia Sports Information Directors Association.

Men's basketball Player of the year

Drexel guard Chris Fouch was a second-team all-Colonial Athletic Association selection. He finished his career with 1,744 points and 275 three-pointers made. He had a 3.56 grade point average as a graduate student in Drexel's sports-management program.

Women's basketball Player of the year

Penn senior Alyssa Barron was the player of the year in both the Ivy League and the Big Five, leading the Quakers to the Ivy championship and their first NCAA tournament berth in 10 years. She is one of six players all-time to be named first-team all-Big Five in four consecutive years. Barron is second on Penn's all-time scoring list with 1,806 points.

Men's swimming Athlete of the year

Ben Smith of Villanova won the first Big East Conference titles for a male swimmer in school history, taking the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events, and set a school record of 48.84 seconds in the 100 'fly. He was named all-Big East in four events: the 800 freestyle relay, 100 'fly, 200 'fly, and 400 medley relay. A three-time Big East academic all-star, he had a 3.376 GPA.

Women's swimming Athlete of the year

Junior Katrin Heider helped lead Villanova to the Big East title, winning the 100 and 200 freestyle events and finishing third in the 50 free. She was also on the winning 200, 400, and 800 freestyle relay teams. The biology major has a 3.884 GPA and is a two-time member of the Big East all-academic team.

Drexel senior squash player Justin Singh led the Dragons in wins the last three years, playing at either No. 1 or No. 2 singles. He helped Drexel climb to No. 14 nationally. Singh finished the year ranked 39th in the nation.

Women's at-large Athlete of the year

Chantal Montrose, a senior fencer at Temple, is a four-time winner of the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association title in epee. This season, she qualified for the NCAA championships for the second time in her career. The advertising major has been named to the Temple President's Honor Roll three times and has a 3.76 GPA.
