Elegar (14.4 points per game) was suspended for one game yesterday by CAA commissioner Tom Yeager for unsportsmanlike conduct in last Saturday's victory at Delaware.
Elegar, a 6-9 junior, was assessed an intentional foul early in the second half for elbowing Delaware's Sam McMahon. When an incensed McMahon verbally responded to the elbowing, McMahon was hit with a technical foul.
CAA commissioner Tom Yeager said the decision to suspend Elegar wasn't reached until yesterday because the process "takes a while."
Yeager said he and his staff watched video of the Elegar-McMahon incident and spoke with representatives of both teams. McMahon, a 6-5 junior, was guarding Elegar throughout the game.
An intentional foul is different from a flagrant foul. Yeager said a flagrant foul "implies more malice" and warrants an automatic ejection. In announcing Elegar's suspension, the CAA said that Elegar committed "a flagrant act."
Drexel coach Bruiser Flint declined to comment about Elegar's suspension.
During Drexel's three-game winning streak, Elegar made 20 of 26 field-goal attempts (.769).
Drexel possibly could be without its two best big men in the noon game. A Drexel official said Chaz Crawford, the CAA's leading rebounder and shot-blocker, is questionable. A right shin bruise kept Crawford, a 6-10 senior, out of Drexel's victory at North Carolina-Wilmington on Wednesday night.
Randy Oveneke, a 6-7 junior, started in Crawford's place against UNCW. He'll likely replace Elegar's against VCU.
Kenny Tribbett, a 6-9 redshirt freshman, and Matt Stevenson, a 6-7 senior, probably will play significant minutes.
Five of the last six Drexel-VCU games have been decided by a total of nine points. The Dragons won two of those games. *
