Numbers have always done a lot for us; now we’re going to let them do something for people who really matter. And if you join us, you may never look at the NCAA Tournament the same way again.
With Mrs. BoopStats’ approval, we have decided to make a donation to the Philadelphia chapter of Coaches vs. Cancer based on the number of points the city’s teams score in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
Our formula is a dollar for every point scored by a Philly team in an NCAA Tourney loss, plus 50 cents for every point scored by a Philly team in an NCAA win (since those points are a gateway to another game, more points, and thus, and more money).
You can come up with your own idea — a penny a point, $10 a win, $3 for every made three-pointer — or wait until the tournament is over and send them a check for any sum ... or donate online anytime at www.phillycoachesvscancer.com.
You don’t have to tell us what you are doing or for how much ... Just do it! It’ll make ripping up your tourney pool after an upsetting opening weekend just a little more bearable.
You can follow how we’re doing as the tournament moves along at www.philly.com/boopstats.
As a guideline, here are the highest-scoring NCAA Tournaments by Philly teams (we did not include any consolation games, just those contests in the main draws):
