Temple's heart aches for Reids

The Temple Owls are saddened by Sunday's unexpected death of Garrett Reid, the eldest of Eagles coach Andy Reid's five children, who also had a connection to Temple.

Garrett Reid's brothers Britt Reid (a graduate assistant coach) and Spencer Reid (redshirt freshman tailback) are members of Temple's football team.

After Monday's practice, Temple coach Steve Addazio, quarterback Chris Coyer and running back Matt Brown were asked how the team is dealing with the loss.

Here's a glimpse of what was said:

Steve Addazio

What has it been like for the Owls since word of Garrett Reid's death broke?

"It's been a tough couple of days – a tough couple of days as all of you can imagine. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Reid family. Obviously, we have Spence here and Britt. We are all very close. It's just a tragic event and your heart breaks. I don't know what else you can say more than that."

On being around Andy Reid?

"He is a wonderful guy. He is a tremendous person. Their family is such close-knit great group of people. And our heart aches for them."

Did any player say he was having a tough time dealing with the loss?

"No, I have not had that. I know there are some people here who are very close [to Britt and Spencer] here that are absolutely upset. It's hard. ... [They are] probably not sure exactly of what to say, do or respond other than let them know you are thinking on them and that's it. … The hardest thing is often time, you don't know what to say."

Will the entire team go to Tuesday's funeral or just the coaching staff?

"We haven't determined that exactly right now in terms of who's going."

As a father can you even imagine what Andy is going through?

"No. Nope. You certainly find yourself thinking about that. No. If I did I would start crying."

Chris Coyer

How tough of a day was it [Sunday] when you get news like that?

"Our hearts goes out to them and their family. That's a tough situation. Our prayers and thoughts go out to their family."

Does this affect a team? Or is it something you have to deal with and move on at some point?

"When we are out there at practice, we are focused on football. We are playing football and that's all there is right now."

Matt Brown

How do you think Spencer Reid is dealing with the loss?

"I mean it's hard. How would you feel if you lost your brother?

Have you had a chance to talk to Spencer?

"Not yet. I sent him a text message, because, you know, he's like my bro. He's my fellow running back and I got a lot of love for Spencer. We communicate."
