Temple forcing Newsome to reach beyond

As expected, Kevin Newsome’s head has been spinning during the first three days of Temple’s football camp.

“He just got here. A lot of information,” Temple coach Steve Addazio said of the former Penn State quarterback.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder arrived at Temple Friday after completing courses at Tidewater Community College in Virginia.

Newsome left Penn State in August 2011 to transfer to Tidewater C.C., which does not have a football team. Since he was denied a waiver to transfer to Temple in January, he's way behind starting quarterback Chris Coyer and backup Juice Granger.

Instead of teaching him a little bit at a time, the Owls have been force-feeding Newsome their offensive scheme.

“It’s hard. It’s overwhelming,” Addazio said. “If you did it at a little bit of a time, and you didn’t force people to reach beyond, you will still be installing in September.”

Newsome worked with the third-team offense during the portion of Monday’s practice that was open to the media.

The junior didn’t attempt a pass, but had a 15- and 25-yard gain against the third-string defense.

He'll be the starter by the Big East opener. Bank it.

I don't think so rm. Coyer showed his stuff last year and deserves to start. He's good. Newsome struggled at PSU. But if the Temple coaches learned anything about sticking to a QB when he's not doing well like last year, if Coyer screws up they should be willing to change. But I don't see that happening - Coyer was a great HS QB in his own right, don't forget. Go Owls.

Im always half glass full, but I expect to see different QB's since the line will need time to come together.

As far as I'm concerned Coyer didn't really show much at all in the four and half games that he played last season (against very weak opponents). Gerardi got the hook way too quickly last year, I expect the same thing to happen to Coyer.
