Chaney on Atlantic Ten Legends' list

Former Temple coach John Chaney was named Tuesday to the Atlantic Ten Conference inaugural Men's Basketball Legends' list.

Chaney and the 15 other members of the 2013 class will be honored at the A-10 tourney on March 16 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

"The considerable contributions each of these gentlemen made to their institution and its basketball program played an important role in shaping the foundation of men's basketball in the Atlantic 10," A-10 commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade said in a press release. "Whether it was building a program that eventually became a founding member or furthering the conference as it grew into a basketball power, each of the honorees is a part of the fabric of A-10 history and we're thrilled to be able to honor them."

Chaney retired in 2006 after a 34-year coaching career - the last 24 at Temple.

The Hall of Fame coach had 741 wins - including a 516-252 record on North Broad Street.  He made 17 NCAA tournament appearances, five NCAA regional finals and was named national coach of the year twice. Chaney also won seven A-10 titles.

Former La Salle player and coach Tom Gola, former St. Joe's forward Mike Bantom, former Massachusetts guard Lou Roe and former Virginia Commonwealth guard Gerald Henderson are the other members of the class with local ties. Henderson had a stint with the 76ers, while Roe played at Atlantic City High.
