Big East Power Rankings Week 12
The excitement Temple had after beating South Florida and Connecticut to open Big East play is long gone.
Struggling mightily, it’s hard to imagine the Owls (3-6, 2-4 Big East) beating those teams in rematches.
That’s why Temple dropped to last place in my updated Big East Power Rankings following a fourth consecutive lopsided loss.
Here’s a look at my power rankings:
1. RUTGERS (8-1, 4-0)
Skinny: The 22d-ranked Scarlet Knights will clinch the outright Big East title by winning their remaining games against Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Louisville.
Previous ranking: 2
Up next: at Cincinnati at noon Saturday
2. LOUISVILLE (9-1, 4-1)
Skinny: Despite an embarrassing setback to Syracuse, the 20th-ranked Cardinals also control their championship destiny. Winning the remaining two games would give Louisville an 11-1 record. It would also have tiebreakers over Cincinnati and Rutgers.
Previous ranking: 1
Up next: at Connecticut on Nov. 24
3. CINCINNATI (7-2, 3-1)
Skinny: If Brendon Kay can play like he did against Temple, the Bearcats will remain in the hunt. However, it’s too early to anoint Kay as Cincinnati’s chosen one. His first true test comes on Saturday against Rutgers.
Previous ranking: 3
Up next: vs. Rutgers at noon Saturday
4. SYRACUSE (5-5, 4-2)
Skinny: I predicted in the preseason that Temple would defeat the Orange this season. I was wrong. At this moment, Syracuse is tough to beat. For proof, ask Louisville.
Previous ranking: 4
Up next: at Missouri at 7 p.m. Saturday
5. SOUTH FLORIDA (3-6, 1-4)
Skinny: The Bulls are far from a powerhouse. But, they are currently better than Connecticut, Pittsburgh and Temple. That’s why South Florida moved up two spots during their bye week.
Previous ranking: 7
Up next: at Miami at 3 p.m. Saturday
6. CONNECTICUT (4-6, 1-4)
Skinny: The far-from-impressive Huskies pulled off their first conference win Friday night. Was it a fluke? We will find out on Nov. 24 against Louisville.
Previous ranking: 8
Up next: at Louisville on Nov. 24
7. PITTSBURGH (4-6, 1-4)
Skinny: The Panthers' lone Big East victory came against Temple. Pitt’s other wins came against teams – Virginia Tech (4-6), Gardner-Webb (2-8) and Buffalo( 3-7) – with a combined 9-21 record.
Previous ranking: 5
Up next: vs. Rutgers on Nov. 24.
8. TEMPLE (3-6 2-4)
Skinny: The Owls' consecutive conference wins seem so long ago. With subpar quarterback play and struggling defense, Temple may have a tough time winning another game.
Previous ranking: 6
Up next: at Army at noon Saturday
