Penn State sophomore defensive end Deion Barnes, a former star at Northeast High School, has been named to his second pre-season awards watch list this week.
Barnes, the 2012 freshman of the year in the Big Ten Conference, earned a spot Thursday on the watch list for the Nagurski Award. The award, sponsored by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club, is presented to the nation’s best defensive player.
On Monday, Barnes was mentioned on the watch list for the Bednarik Award, presented by the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia and given to the nation’s best defensive football player.
Two Penn State seniors, guard John Urschel and defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, saw their names on the watch list for the Outland Trophy, presented to the nation’s top interior lineman. The Outland winner is announced with other awards Dec. 12 on ESPN.
Barnes led the Nittany Lions last season in sacks (6.0), tackles for loss (10.0) and forced fumbles (three). Urschel earned first-team All-Big Ten honors last season. Jones steadily improved last season as an anchor with fellow defensive tackle Jordan Hill in the middle of the defensive line.
