O'Brien says Smith left team for personal reasons

In a one-sentence statement, Penn State coach Bill O'Brien said senior wide receiver Devon Smith has left the team for personal reasons.

According to an 18-word sentence Friday on the Penn State football Twitter account, coach Bill O'Brien said senior wide receiver Devon Smith has left the team for personal reasons.

Reports were that O'Brien had kicked Smith off the team but neither O'Brien nor the program has addressed those accounts.

The 5-foot-7, 147-pound Smith, one of the fastest players on the team, had been arrested during the spring on misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. He has requested Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition as a first-time offender.

Smith was third on the team last season with 25 catches for 402 yards and two touchdowns. He missed much of spring practice with a sprained left foot.

In other news from Penn State, the athletic department announced that students again had sold out the student section at Beaver Stadium, purchasing more than 21,000 season tickets for the 2012 football year.
