La Salle students cross line with chant

'Best' and 'Worst' awards from Temple vs. La Salle game

My look at some of the best and worst performances and moments from Temple’s 80-79 overtime victory over La Salle on Wednesday at the Tom Gola Arena:

Player of the game: Even in a loss, Earl Pettis gets this award. Making five of 10 three-pointers, the La Salle senior scored a career-high 33 points. He added five rebounds, two steals and two assists in 44 minutes. At times, he was unstoppable on the floor.  Pettis scored La Salle’s last 13 points in regulation and 18 of the team’s final 20 points overall.

Worst sportsmanship:  A few morons in La Salle’s student section were at it, again. They chanted ‘F--- you Temple’ on occasion. The sad thing was this came from students at a Catholic university on Ash Wednesday. At least this time their chants weren’t racist. In the teams’ Jan. 18 matchup, they chanted “Taco Bell” as Temple point guard Juan Fernandez made a pair of foul shots with 2 minutes, 5 seconds left. Fernandez is from Argentina.

Best bounce-back game: Ramone Moore was held to three points in Temple’s victory over Duquesne on Saturday. But on Wednesday, the fifth-year senior guard showed why he’s a front runner to win  the Atlantic Ten and Big Five player-of-the-year awards. Moore finished with 18 points, a season-best nine rebounds and five assists.

Worst on-court moment:  This also goes to Moore for displaying poor judgement that cost his team. With his team up by five points, Moore picked up a technical foul after committing an offensive foul on La Salle’s Sam Mills with 1 minute, 33 seconds left in regulation. Pettis went on to make the two technical foul shots. Eight seconds later, Pettis nailed a three-pointer to tie the score.

Best defensive effort: It would be insane to not give this award to Micheal Eric. Temple’s 6-foot-11 center had a career-best six blocked shots and altered several other shot attempts. This was Eric’s best game since returning from a fracture kneecap. The graduate student also had a season-best 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Worst defensive stretch: La Salle had a tough time making stops in the second half. As a result, the Owls shot 72.2 percent (13 for 18) during that time. Luckily for the Explorers, Pettis’ offensive production made up for their defensive lapses.

Are we "allowed" to leave comments on this College Basketball article?

    Let's see... I'll wait.

Looking back in hindsight, that is bad language, even in a rivalry game.

But I'm sure you did hear worse during those North Catholic - Frankford Thanksgiving Day rivalry games from 1985-88 back in the day. I know I did.

did you miss the la salle student section chanting U-S-A when fernandez was shooting free throws in overtime? i guess it's only less racist than the taco bell chants because of its subtlety. classless either way.

No matter. Temple won and LaSalle will be watching the NCAA tourney from home. Works for me. Go Owls!

Foul language is a weak mind expressing strong feelings. If you curse the other team, God will punish you...in overtime...by one point...at home...after coming back from 10 points down. Blasphemers confess and repent if your team has any hopes in the A10 Tournament.

You're right, classless either way. My thing is, it almost illuminates a bigger issue which is younger folks having no respect. At the end of the day, the Temple players live in the same area as Lasalle kids (Philly and surrounding burbs) so even though they are not TU fans hating on us is just ignorant. I smell bitterness due to the fact we've won A-10 titles, made it to the tourney, had a steady stream of good recruits, headed to the big east, I won't keep going but you catch my drift. Go Owls.

Big 5 games should be an opportunity for fans to be on their best behavior and enjoy some of the best basketball in the country.

not clear why the fact this was a Catholic univeristy has the slightest relevance...what about if it was a college founded by Baptists or Methodists --are they presumed not to be "religious" ...or is because Catholics may have some different beliefs that Mr. Pompey that he thinks that the chant of students (who may be Moslem or atheists as far as we know) somehow reflects poorly on practitioners of Catholicism who founded the university --who's being prejudiced here? (and no I'm certainly not a Catholic)
