Report: Hiring Eddie Jordan could cost Rutgers big money

Rutgers' perennially cash-strapped athletic department could be forced to dig deep in order to lure Eddie Jordan away from the NBA.

The Associated Press reported that the two sides are near a deal, but Jordan won't come cheap.

Whereas fired coach Mike Rice made $650,000 a year, the Newark Star-Ledger reported that even paying Jordan $1 million would put him in the lower end of Big Ten salaries.

That's the price Rutgers must pay for joining one of the nation's most prominent and wealthiest athletic conferences.

Ten of the 12 men's basketball head coaches in the Big Ten are known to make seven-figure salaries, with new Northwestern coach Chris Collins' salary not yet public. Only Penn State's Pat Chambers is known to make under $1 million annually.
