Could the Flyers and Penguins face off at Beaver Stadium?

This upcoming season, the National Hockey League will be holding a total of six outdoor games. It is, perhaps, a way to apologize for the lockout, but it also may be a way for the league to gain back some lost revenue from last year's work stoppage.

This upcoming season, the National Hockey League will be holding a total of six outdoor games. It is, perhaps, a way to apologize for the lockout, but it also may be a way for the league to gain back some lost revenue from last year's work stoppage.

So why not consider adding a seventh outdoor game? According to Yahoo.com’s Puck Daddy blogger Greg Wyshynski, an ideal option for another outdoor game would be between the Flyers and Penguins at Penn State’s Beaver Stadium.

Beaver Stadium would be the perfect place for a cross-state rivalry game, since the location is on neutral ground. Holding a game between the Flyers and Penguins at this venue would also cut down on travel distance for fans, as it would be shorter for fans traveling from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and vice-versa.

Penn State officials have already confirmed that they are "seriously considering" an outdoor hockey game, whether it be an NHL or Big Ten event.

The idea of a Flyers-Penguins game may fall through because of Penn State alum Terry Pegula's involvement with the university's hockey program. Pegula, as in Pegula Ice Arena, is the reason the school's hockey program exists after his $88 million donation.

Pegula is also the owner of the Buffalo Sabres and its AHL affiliate the Rochester Americans, so it is possible that the Sabres could be in the mix for an outdoor game at Beaver Stadium.

The school is also considering the possibility of holding a Big Ten hockey game outdoors. Some of the NCAA opponents being considered to play the Nittany Lions are Notre Dame, Boston College and Michigan.

While an NHL outdoor game would bring in a lot of revenue and attention, an NCAA game outside would also be beneficial for Penn State’s budding hockey program.
