Villanova's fifth-ranked basketball team will open its season Friday night at the Pavilion against Fairleigh Dickinson.

Forward-center Mouphtaou Yarou, a 6-10 freshman who started and had eight points and six rebounds in 26 minutes in last Thursday's exhibition win over Division II Kutztown at the Wachovia Center, will play.

His eligibility was called into question in an article in yesterday's online Sporting News Today, which claimed Yarou was listed on a FIBA - basketball's international governing body - Web site as a player in a 2007 Africa Cup tournament. That would make him 25 years old, instead of the 19 it states in the bio on the university's athletic department Web site.

If true, that could jeopardize his eligiblity to play collegiately.

Coach Jay Wright told ESPN.com that Yarou didn't play in that tourney.

"He was cleared by the NCAA's Eligibility Center," Wright said. "His passport, all his documentation, has his birthdate [June 26, 1990] on it. All we can do is just work with the NCAA on this."

Yarou, who didn't play basketball until 2004, emigrated to the United States 3 years later from Benin in West Africa. He spent his junior season at Massanutten Military Academy in Woodbridge, Va. He then went to Montrose Christian Academy in Rockville, Md., where he averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds per game before signing a national letter of intent with Villanova.

"We take very seriously any question regarding NCAA compliance, and are currently reviewing all the information related to Mouphtaou's enrollment," said Villanova athletic director Vince Nicastro. "We have cooperated fully with the NCAA throughout this process, and have been in communication with them on this particular matter."

Gordon Finch, Villanova's assocatiate AD for compliance, told the Sporting News: "I don't have a compelling need to look into it because I believe it's probably a typo. We've got his passport, his naturalization papers and his international student athlete form, all of which don't have that [older age] as his birthdate."

According to the Sporting News, a player named Mouphtaou Yarou is listed on the roster of a team that competed in the 2007 Africa Cup for Men's Clubs tourney. He's listed as being from the hometown of Matitingou, one letter off from what Villanova lists as his hometown in Benin, with a birthdate of June 26, 1984. Villanova's Yarou is from Natitingou.

I would image there has to be some kind of photographic record of the Africa Cup For Men's Club Tourney. This should be fairly easy to resolve. It would not be the first time that a news article had the worong information. As far as the whining Hawk, eat your heart out. If your lucky, you make the conference tourney at the end of the year. A real tourney, like maybe the NIT, is beyond your wildest dreams, Keep raving about your chrome dome coach as you struggle through a 10 win season.

V for Villanova. V for Victory. V for (NCAA)VIOLATIONS. Another fine future Villanova student athlete. He's only 23? Where are you WISEONE ? Ironing your pink sweater vest for work today?

He's 19: How many 25 year olds grow 2 inches and gain 40 lbs in a year???? None, it is medically improbable, maybe impossible.

If he is 25 that only makes him one year older then Nova Junior Scholar Athlete Anotonio Pena. Pena went to the same diploma mill as 2 other Nova Alumni. Anyone mystery why all of Nova's players come from from Private Schools? Grades easy to come by at some of those schools.

To all the Hawk fans, we mock what we do not understand. Are you saying that a diploma at a private school is easier to attain than a Philly public school diploma. Also, I would not slur the private school education as your comrades at St. Joe's Prep might take offense. And what is wrong with a nice pink sweater vest?? It is a viable option when the fuscia cardigan is at the dry cleaners.

What I don't understand is why this is being brought up now, when he has already been cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse. Hawks2004 - Your St. Joe's education precedes you with grammatical and spelling errors. Where is proof of this so-called "cheating for years" and alleged violations (jabdad)? And what in the hell is "thwnd"???

Yeah, Nova should recruit and admit geniuses like Delonte West, the upstanding citizen and St. Joes alum who was pulled over on his motorcycle with two handguns and a shotgun in a guitar case...knowing the strict gun laws in this part of the country, we might be saying Bye, Bye Birdy!

Hawks 2004...nice spelling there champ! The jealousy of Villanova by St. Joes students and alumni is alarming, please stop sweating us with respect to academics and sports. We will give you a fair shot at obtaining a job at our companies if you graduate and interview well, don't despair. Also, you can visit our beautiful and wealthy area at any time and leave that piece of garbage ghetto hood you call campus. Let's go Nova, final four here we come again!

Hawks2004 - jealousy? really? why would any nova student/alum ever be jealous of any st. joe's product, in the classroom or on the court? st. joe's acceptance rate this year was 86% (compare that to nova's 39% and temple's 61%). that's unbelievable. i think west virginia is harder to get into nowadays than SJU. and don't act like nova is a school only for rich kids when st. joe's charges $45,665 for tuition, room, and board. but i love when sju kids think of themselves as tough, philly city school kids, when even SJU lists themselves as a suburban campus. please. st. joe's students are the most delusional hypocrites alive. enjoy your NIT first round loss. we'll enjoy our back-to-back final 4 appearances.
