Villanova freshman sidelined with hip injury

Tim Delaney will have surgery next week to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.

VILLANOVA'S basketball team will be without 6-8 1/2 freshman Tim Delaney for an indefinite period. The Mullica Hill, N.J., native is undergoing surgery next week to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.

The Wildcats have to replace three starters - including 6-7 forward JayVaughn Pinkston, a four-year starter - from a team that won 33 games last season.

"Tim had a great summer and preseason," coach Jay Wright said in a statement released yesterday. "The good news is that the doctors tell us this is an injury that can be fixed and we know Tim will be fully committed to his rehab."

There is no current timetable for his return.

The Wildcats do have 6-11 senior Daniel Ochefu at center. And 6-8 Darryl Reynolds, who hasn't played much yet, probably will contribute off the bench. But everyone knows Wright likes to play perimeter guys. And he has a bunch of those if they want to go small, including newcomer Jalen Brunson, who was considered one of the top lead guards in the 2015 recruiting class. There's a good chance that 6-5 junior Josh Hart, the reigning Big East Sixth Man of the Year, could start at power forward.
