Darnell Foreman waited all basketball season to hear from a college coach such as Jerome Allen of the University of Pennsylvania.

He finally did, a few hours after leading Pitman to the Group 1 state championship on March 9.

"They came in late, and they came in fast," Foreman said of Penn's efforts to recruit him.

Foreman, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, on Wednesday committed to Penn.

"It's a great fit," Foreman said. "The Palestra has a lot of history there, and it's a great place to play."

Foreman, a top student, said he plans to major in communications. He said the opportunity to earn an Ivy League education was a "big factor" in his decision.

Foreman also was considering Hartford, Georgian Court, and American International. He also drew recruiting interest from Navy.

"It was a hard decision, because in the back of your mind you're always waiting to see what schools might recruit you," Foreman said. "But when I got involved with Penn, I knew it was the right decision.

"I got a chance to spend some time with Coach [Allen], visit the campus, hang out with some of the players. I knew it was the right place for me."

Foreman was a first-team all-South Jersey selection after leading Pitman to a 25-8 record and the third state title in school history. He averaged 17.4 points and elevated his play in the state tournament.

"Pitman is excited and super proud of him," coach Kevin Crawford said.
