Penn State's Lucas is picked by WNBA's Mercury

Former Penn State star Maggie Lucas saw her basketball career come full circle on Monday night when the Phoenix Mercury selected her with the 21st pick in the WNBA draft.

Phoenix finished 19-15 last season, good for third in the Western Conference. A second-round pick, Lucas was the second player selected by the Mercury, which used the 17th overall pick on Tiffany Bias of Oklahoma State.

The two-time Big Ten player of the year, Lucas scored 2,510 points in her career, second all-time at Penn State and fourth overall in the Big Ten. She averaged 21.0 points last season.

Lucas joins a roster that features probably the best player in the WNBA in forward Diana Taurasi. The Mercury last season added 6-8 center Brittney Griner with the top pick in the draft.

"It feels great," Lucas said late Monday night. "It is humbling to see your name in the draft. I'm grateful and I feel blessed to have this opportunity."

Lucas will spend the next few weeks getting ready for camp, which begins April 17. The regular season starts May 17.

She is looking forward to playing with her high-profile Mercury teammates. "Taurisi is the best player in the world and they have Brittney Griner," she said. "That's going to be fun to work with."

With the 24th overall pick in the draft, the Minnesota Lynx selected Vanderbilt's Christina Foggie, a former star at Lenape. The 5-9 guard is from Mount Laurel.

Foggie, who averaged a career-best 19 points per game, won the SEC scoring title this past season. She finished her college career as Vanderbilt's all-time leader in three-pointers with 276 and finished her career ranked seventh on the program's all-time scoring list.

Chiney Ogwumike was selected No. 1 by the Connecticut Sun.

Ogwumike joined her sister Nneka, drafted by Los Angeles in 2012, as the only siblings to be chosen first in the WNBA.
