Hartford leads Temple Invitational
Evan Russell shot a blistering 8-under-par 62, believed to be a competitive course record at Philmont Country Club, and paced Hartford to the first-round lead Saturday at the Temple Invitational.
Russell, a sophomore, started on the back nine and birdied his first four holes. He double-bogeyed the 16th, but birdied 17 and 18 to make the turn in 4-under, then added birdies at Nos. 2, 5, 8 and 9.
The Hawks, who also got a 69 from Anthony Vecchiarelli, finished the opening 18 with a team score of 2-over 282. Host Temple and Harvard were tied for second at 286, and Richmond was another shot back at 287.
Temple sophomore Brandon Matthews led the Owls with a 68, good for third place in the individual standings behind Russell and Richmond's Jack Wilkes, who fired a 67. Harvard's top scorer was Daniel De La Garza, who shot a 69.
Among the other Big Five teams in the field, Penn was tied for fifth, St. Joseph's tied for 10th, and La Salle tied for 14th.
