College Basketball: Michigan's Trey Burke named player of the year
Trey Burke, the sophomore point guard who led Michigan to the Final Four, was named Thursday as the Associated Press' college basketball player of the year.
Burke and Cazzie Russell (in 1966) are the only Michigan players to win the award. The Big Ten player of the year, Burke averaged 19.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 6.7 assists. He received 31 votes from the 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly top 25.
Jim Larranaga, who led Miami (29-7) to the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season and tournament titles, was selected as coach of the year. Larranaga, 63, received 29 votes. The voting ended on Selection Sunday.
Rush resigns. Ed Rush resigned as the Pac-12 basketball coordinator of officials after making comments during internal meetings that appeared to target Arizona coach Sean Miller.
Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said Rush made an "inappropriate joke" before the Pac-12 semifinal that included offers of $5,000 and a trip to Cancun if officials called a technical foul on Miller.
Ware in Atlanta. Kevin Ware was greeted with cheers at Louisville's hotel for the Final Four.
NIT final. Pierre Jackson had his fourth consecutive double-double with 17 points and 10 assists to lead No. 2 seed Baylor (23-14) to the first National Invitation Tournament title in school history with a 74-54 win over No. 3 Iowa (25-13) at New York's Madison Square Garden. Hawkeyes star Devyn Marble was held to six points.
