Report: Skyler Mornhinweg switches from Nits to Gators

St. Joseph's Prep quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg, who commited to Penn State last summer, has changed his mind and made a verbal commitment to Florida.

ESPN reported the commitment today, and GatorCountry.com confirmed it.

Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease played college football at Montana with Skyler's father, Marty Mornhinweg, the Eagles' offensive coordinator.

GatorCountry.com said Skyler visited Florida with his mother. The website said that Pease and Gators head coach Will Muschamp visited Mornhinweg at the Prep on Wednesday.

Mornhinweg's commitment to Florida is nonbinding until he signs a letter of intent, with national signing day is Wednesday.

Mornhinweg, who is 6-3, 215 pounds, was named Daily News co-Catholic League player of the year in December.

He accounted for 2,527 yards and 27 TDs as the Hawks went 7-4 overall. He had two of his best games against top-notch opposition, accounting for 666 yards and 11 TDs in wins over North Penn, the AAAA state runner-up, and Malvern Prep, the outright Inter-Ac League champion.

Mornhinweg passed 144-for-276 for 1,780 yards and 21 TDs, while adding 747 yards and six scores on 27 rushes. He also completed his fourth season as a starting defensive back.

In his career, Mornhinweg passed for 4,859 yards, the No. 5 total in city history, and 52 TDs. He added 17 more rushing scores and two on returns.

Penn State has had several decommitments since the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal became public and since Joe Paterno was fired.

Earlier this week, Penn State got a commitment from quarterback Steven Bench, from Cairo, Ga., who now is the only quarterback in the 2012 recruiting class. Penn State has 18 commitments.
