College Basketball: Cheltenham star among four who commit to St. Joe's women

Cheltenham's Ciara Andrews is one of four high school girls' basketball players who signed national letters of intent Friday to attend St. Joseph's next season. The others are Sarah Fairbanks of Elizabethtown, Pa.; Casey Smith of Danbury, Conn.; and Jordan Strode of Harrisburg, N.C.

"We are excited about our 2012 recruiting class. All four of them are accomplished high school players and will bring both personal and team success to our program," Hawks coach Cindy Griffin said.

Andrews averaged 19.7 points per game last season. The 5-foot-9 guard earned first-team all-state honors as a junior and was named the Suburban One American Conference player of the year.

Wagner 59, Pittsburgh 54 - Latif Rivers scored all 18 of his points in the second half - including six critical free throws in the final minute - to lead the Seahawks (8-3) past the 15th-ranked Panthers (11-2) in Pittsburgh.

Kenneth Ortiz had 12 points, and Tyler Murray added 10 for Wagner, which won its first game over a ranked opponent since knocking off then-15th-ranked Alabama on Nov. 24, 1978.

Ashton Gibbs scored 14 points for the Panthers, whose winning streak ended at nine games after they turned the ball over 18 times.

Louisville 70, Western Kentucky 60 - Russ Smith scored 23 points as the fourth-ranked Cardinals (12-0) overcame a sleepy start and rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second half to beat the visiting Hilltoppers (4-9).

Gorgui Dieng had 13 points and 15 rebounds - his fifth consecutive double-double - for the Cardinals, who remained one of the nation's six unbeaten Division I teams. Kyle Kuric added 15 points - 12 coming in the first half.

Wisconsin 79, Mississippi Valley State 45 - Jordan Taylor scored 17 points to lead the 13th-ranked Badgers (11-2) past the Delta Devils (1-10) in Madison, Wis.

The Badgers took 44 free throws, 23 more than their previous season high, and sank 31 of them.

UNLV 85, California 68 - Chace Stanback scored 15 points, and Mike Moser added 14 points and eight rebounds for the 21st-ranked Rebels (13-2), who have won 11 games this season in Las Vegas. Justin Cobbs led the visiting Golden Bears (10-3) with 20 points.

  Seton Hall 87, Longwood 61 - Jordan Theodore scored a career-high 26 points in Farmville, Va., as the visiting Pirates (11-1) overcame an early double-digit deficit to win their eighth straight.

Antwan Carter led the Lancers (4-8) with 20 points.

Vermont 65, Towson 49 - Luke Apfeld scored 24 points in 22 minutes as the visiting Catamounts (6-7) dealt the Tigers (0-11) their 30th consecutive loss.

Towson's last win was in overtime over La Salle last season.

Jarnell Stokes, a top power-forward prospect from Memphis, plans to enroll at Tennessee in January and could be eligible to play for the Volunteers immediately. The 6-foot-8 Stokes graduated this month from Memphis' Southwind High School.
