Jameer Nelson elected to Saint Joseph's Hall of Fame

IF YOU CHECKED out the NBA schedule, you might wonder how Jameer Nelson would be able to make the 10th Saint Joseph's Athletics Hall of Fame Celebration on Nov. 5. Unless the lockout ends soon, the 2004 National Player of the Year will be able to make the ceremony, instead of playing that night for Orlando in Washington.

After a sensational career at Chester High, which he led to the AAAA state championship, Nelson, who holds the St. Joe's career marks for points (2,094), assists (713) and steals (256), led his team to a 27-0 regular season and seconds away from the 2004 Final Four. That he was elected to the SJU Hall of Fame was just about a lock from the moment he set foot on campus.

Nelson will be joined in this class by rebound machine Mike Hauer (1,496 points, 976 rebounds) and Dan Kelly, 15th on the SJU scoring list (1,524 points), just ahead of Hauer. Kelly and Hauer played together from 1967-70. Hauer averaged 19.2 points and 12.5 rebounds for his career. Kelly averaged 19.1 points, including 20.7 points in 1969-70. Kelly and Hauer were both inducted into the Saint Joseph's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980.

Joining the three Hawk hoopsters as inductees will be: Steve Ave '87 (men's track), Vicki Boyer '94 (cross country/track), Phil Greipp '64 (men's rowing), Kevin Kirkby '01 (baseball) and Terri Mohr '86 (women's basketball).
