DA’s office investigating Holy Family basketball incident

The District Attorney's Office has begun an investigation into a private criminal complaint by Holy Family basketball player Matthew Kravchuk, according to a statement from the DA's office.

The District Attorney's Office has begun an investigation into a private criminal complaint by Holy Family basketball player Matthew Kravchuk, according to a statement from the DA's office.

In the complaint, Kravchuk alleged that coach John O'Connor, grabbed and elbowed him in the face during practice on Jan. 25.

According to the statement, the DA's private criminal complaint unit will determine in the next few weeks whether to file charges in this case.

A spokeswoman said the DA's office generally does not comment on private complaints, but issued a statement because of the number of media inquiries about this case.

Kravchuk filed a police complaint Feb. 11.

O'Connor was suspended by the school last Thursday, pending an investigation.

Kravchuk has not played since the incident, citing a wrist injury.

A video of the practice session has surfaced, leading to national attention for the case.

"Without question, it's an aggressive rebounding drill in the hopes of inspiring toughness for the entire team," O'Connor's attorney, John Gallagher, told the Daily News on Monday.

Kravchuk and his attorney taped a segment scheduled to air on "Good Morning America" today, but a spokeswoman said the segment was bumped for time because of the situation in Libya and the New Zealand earthquake.
