College Basketball: No. 3 Duke falls to St. John's

Dwight Hardy scored 26 points and St. John's stunned No. 3 Duke, 93-78, in New York City on Sunday, capping the Red Storm's run of eight straight games against ranked teams with their third win.

The Red Storm (12-8), who had lost three straight and five of six, took control early and had a 46-25 lead at halftime. The Blue Devils (19-2), who came into the game shooting 40 percent from three-point range, missed their first 10 shots from behind the arc and made 1 of 13 in the half.

The Blue Devils' overall shooting wasn't a whole lot better as they shot 29.6 percent (8 of 27) in the half and were careless with the ball, committing 11 turnovers.

St. John's had a lot to do with how poorly Duke played, using a three-quarter-court trap to force the Blue Devils into low-percentage passes that almost all seemed to either be stolen by the Red Storm or just thrown away.

The win by St. John's gave the Big East a 6-1 record against teams ranked in the top 10 this season.

Duke's defeat continued the weekend of misery for the top 25. On Saturday, four teams in the top 10 and 11 ranked teams overall lost.

Justin Brownlee had 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Red Storm. St. John's shot 58.2 percent for the game (32 of 55) and was 26 of 33 from the free-throw line.

Nolan Smith led Duke with 32 points and Kyle Singler added 20. The Blue Devils finished 5 of 26 from three-point range with 17 turnovers.

Michigan State 84, Indiana 83 - Draymond Green made a go-ahead shot with 29.3 seconds left in overtime and the No. 25 Spartans (13-8, 5-4 Big Ten) survived a challenge by the Hoosiers (11-11, 2-7) in East Lansing, Mich.

Washington State 87, Washington 80 - Klay Thompson poured in 25 points as the Cougars (15-6, 5-4 Pac-10) upended the No 18 Huskies (15-5, 7-2) in Pullman, Wash.

Virginia Commonwealth 69, Drexel 65 - Courtney Hurt had 23 points and 20 rebounds as the Rams (12-7, 7-2 CAA) held on to beat the Dragons (12-8, 4-5) in Richmond, Va.

A furious rally in the final four minutes saw Drexel nearly recover from a 10-point deficit, but it wasn't enough.

Jasmina Rosseel led the Dragons with 17 points. Kamile Nacickaite added 12 points and eight rebounds despite shooting 2 for 13 from the floor.

Hollie Mershon came off the bench to score 11 points and energize Drexel in the second half. The Dragons hurt themselves by committing 17 turnovers, from which the Rams generated 22 points. The Rams shot 56.6 percent for the game.

Baylor 63, Texas A&M 60 - Odyssey Sims scored 25 points and Brittney Griner had 17 points and 12 rebounds to help the top-ranked Bears (19-1, 6-0 Big Twelve) topped the No. 6 Aggies (18-2, 6-1) in College Station, Texas.

Penn State 80, Ohio State 71 - Alex Bentley had 21 points and seven assists and Maggie Lucas added 18 points, hitting six three-pointers, as the Nittany Lions (18-5, 7-2 Big Ten) beat the No. 23 Buckeyes (13-8, 4-5) in State College, Pa.

DePaul 78, West Virginia 55 - Keisha Hampton scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures as the No. 12 Blue Demons (21-2, 8-0 Big East) routed the No. 8 Mountaineers (19-3, 5-3) in Chicago.

Louisiana State 47, Georgia 41 - Katherine Graham had 14 points and Adrienne Webb added 11 as the Tigers (15-8, 5-4 Southeastern Conference) held off the No. 20 Bulldogs (16-5, 6-2) in Baton Rouge, La.

Elsewhere: In Fayetteville, Ark., Shekinna Stricklen matched her career-high of 26 points to lift fifth-ranked Tennessee (21-2, 9-0 SEC) to a 72-53 win over Arkansas (16-5, 4-5). . . . Alyssa Thomas scored all 14 of her points in a decisive first half to pace No. 14 Maryland (18-3) in an 84-38 demolition of Longwood (4-15) in College Park, Md. . . . Italee Lucas scored 19 points as No. 15 North Carolina (19-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) pinned a 76-51 loss on Virginia Tech (9-12, 0-7) in Chapel Hill, N.C.
