Miami fired coach Randy Shannon on Saturday night, hours after the Hurricanes finished a 7-5 regular season that began with championship expectations.

"We have made a decision to seek new leadership for our football program," athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a release. "Our expectations are to compete for championships and return to the top of the college football world."

Shannon received a four-year extension before the start of the 2010 season. He was 28-22 in four seasons at Miami.

Miami lost to South Florida, 23-20, in overtime on Saturday afternoon, in a game where only about 27,000 people filled the 73,000 seats at Sun Life Stadium.

Cal assistant suspended. California defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi was suspended for Saturday's loss to Washington after admitting he instructed a player to fake an injury in a 15-13 defeat at No. 1 Oregon on Nov. 13.

Boston College 16, Syracuse 7-Andre Williams ran with his big chance. Pressed into a starting role in place of injured star Montel Harris, the freshman tailback rushed for 185 yards on a school-record 42 carries and scored one touchdown as the Eagles (7-5) beat the host Orange.

Syracuse (7-5) was quarterbacked by Ryan Nassib (Malvern Prep), who was 15 of 24 for 147 yards and one pick.

Hawaii 59, New Mexico State 24 - Alex Green rushed for a school record 327 yards and three touchdowns, Bryant Moniz threw four touchdown passes, and the Warriors (9-3, 7-1 Western Athletic) beat the Aggies (2-10, 1-7) in Las Cruces, N.M., to secure a share of the conference title. Hawaii is tied for first place with Boise State and Nevada.

Washington 16, California 13 - Chris Polk scored on a 1-yard run as time expired, and the Huskies (5-6, 4-4 Pac-10) denied the Golden Bears (5-7, 3-6) bowl eligibility while keeping their postseason hopes alive with a victory in Berkeley, Calif.

Tennessee 24, Kentucky 14 - Tyler Bray threw for 354 yards and two touchdowns as the Volunteers (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) beat the Wildcats (6-6, 2-6 Southeastern Conference) to become bowl eligible with a victory in Knoxville, Tenn.

Lehigh 14, Northern Iowa 7 - Chris Lum threw a pair of third-quarter touchdown passes and the Mountain Hawks (10-2) defeated the Panthers (7-5) in the first round of the FCS playoffs in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Lum completed 18 of 37 passes for 262 yards, and Ryan Spadola caught nine passes for 127 yards and a TD for Lehigh, which won its eighth straight game. Lehigh advances to play Delaware, which had a first-round bye.
