Sports in Brief: Another honor for O'Donnell

Katie O'Donnell of the national champion Maryland field hockey team has been selected the 2010 NFHCA Division I national player of the year.

Katie O'Donnell of the national champion Maryland field hockey team has been selected the 2010 NFHCA Division I national player of the year.

O'Donnell, a graduate of Wissahickon High, led the nation in assists per game in 2010 with an average of 1.33 as well as in points per game with an average of 4.08. She is the only player in NCAA history to break the marks of 100 career assists and 300 career points.

Earlier this fall, O'Donnell was named the Women's Sports Foundation's sportswoman of the year.

Tom Donnelly, coach of the NCAA Division III national champion Haverford College men's cross-country team, has been named coach of the year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Following a second straight unbeaten Ivy League season, Penn's football team received a team-record 21 selections to the all-Ivy teams, including nine first-team members.

Three offensive linemen were named first-team all-Ivy: seniors Joseph D'Orazio and Luis Ruffolo and junior Greg Van Roten. Sophomore quarterback Billy Ragone and senior fullback Luke DeLuca joined the trio on the first-team all-Ivy offense. On defense, linebackers Erik Rask, a junior, and Zach Heller, a senior, were joined by senior defense back Josh Powers and sophomore defensive lineman Brandon Copeland on the first team.

Among the all-Ivy second-team honorees were offensive lineman Drew Luongo, running back Brandon Colavita, defensive lineman Drew Goldsmith, and defensive back Matt Hamscher.

TENNIS: Roger Federer easily defeated Andy Murray at the ATP World Tour Finals in London, winning 6-4, 6-2 to stretch his record to 2-0 at the season-ending event.

Federer looked unstoppable on the court at the O2 Arena, losing only eight points on his serve in the match - three in the first set and five in the second.

Federer has won the season-ending event for the world's top eight players four times.

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal will take on Novak Djokovic on Wednesday, while Andy Roddick and Tomas Berdych will play in the early Group A match.

FIGURE SKATING: University of Delaware alumna Kimmie Meissner and 10 other American figure-skating stars have been added to the lineup of The Caesars Tribute: A Salute to the Golden Age of American Skating event Dec. 11 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The skaters, including Calla Urbanski and Rocky Marval, will join Evan Lysacek, Nancy Kerrigan, and Sasha Cohen.
