Gerhart ran for 205 yards and three scores, threw an 18-yard touchdown pass, and scored the game-winning touchdown with 59 seconds left to help Stanford hand Weis and the Fighting Irish a fourth straight loss to end the regular season, 45-38, last night in Stanford, Calif.
On a night when Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate put on an aerial show for the Irish (6-6) in a showcase for Weis' offense, it was Gerhart who won the game for Stanford (8-4) and possibly earned a trip to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist in two weeks.
He threw his touchdown pass to Ryan Whalen on fourth and 4 to help the Cardinal tie the game early in the fourth quarter, and then won it with his 4-yard TD run in the final minute.
At 6-6, Notre Dame can't be offered an at-large bowl bid if there are any available teams with winning records.
Connecticut 56 Syracuse 31 - The tailback tandem of Jordan Todman and Andre Dixon combined for 196 yards rushing and four touchdowns as the Huskies (6-5 overall, 2-4 Big East) hammered the Orange (4-8, 1-6) in East Hartford, Conn., to become bowl-eligible.
UConn, which lost three in a row after the stabbing death of cornerback Jasper Howard, went over .500 for the first time since the Oct. 18 tragedy. The Huskies' five losses came by a total of 15 points.
Boston College 19, Maryland 17 - Montel Harris ran for 142 yards, Dave Shinskie threw a 66-yard touchdown pass, and the Eagles (8-4, 5-3 ACC) edged the Terps (2-10, 1-7) in College Park. The defeat sealed Maryland's first 10-loss season.
Elsewhere: Missouri had 553 total yards but needed a safety with 2 minutes, 39 seconds left and Grant Ressel's 27-yard field goal as time expired to edge Kansas, 41-39, in Kansas City. . . . Riley Skinner passed for a career-high 372 yards and a school-record five touchdowns to help Wake Forest defeat Duke, 45-34, in Durham, N.C. . . . Alex Zendejas kicked a 32-yard field goal as time expired as Arizona defeated Arizona State, 20-17, in Tempe. . . . Taylor Potts threw a pair of touchdown passes to Lyle Leong less than two minutes apart as Texas Tech topped Baylor, 20-13, in Arlington, Texas.
Jake Locker threw for 196 yards and a touchdown as Washington posted its first shutout of rival Washington State in 45 years with a 30-0 win in Seattle. . . . Montario Hardesty ran for three touchdowns, including a 20-yard game-winner in overtime, as Tennessee outlasted Kentucky, 30-24, in Lexington for the Vols' 25th straight victory against their border rivals.
