Delaware survives Penn challenge, 97-94

Delaware scratched its way back from a 50-40 halftime deficit and survived two overtimes with some key free throws last night in a 97-94 win over Penn at the Palestra.

"It's a very difficult loss, but we had our chances," Penn coach Glen Miller said.

The Quakers (0-3) appeared to be on their way to their first win of the season after shooting 58.3 percent from the field and making six three-pointers in the first half. They led, 77-69, with 5 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in regulation, but Delaware (1-2) got three-pointers from Alphonso Dawson, Jawan Carter, and D.J. Boney, and tied the game with 43 seconds left.

Zack Rosen hit a layup with 13 seconds to play, but Hakim McCullar put back Carter's missed three just before the horn sounded to force OT.

Rosen fouled out with 6.8 seconds left in the first overtime, forcing Miller to insert freshman Malcolm Washington at point guard.

Jack Eggleston had a chance to tie the score driving to the lane with 5.8 seconds left, but was called for a charge. Edwin Santiago made it 97-94 after being fouled on the inbounds play, and Washington's three at the buzzer missed off the backboard.

Carter, who transferred to Delaware from St. Joseph's, finished the game with 35 points, including 19 free throws from 26 attempts. Rosen was Penn's leading scorer with 25 points, including 10-of-11 shooting from the free-throw line.

Penn made only two of six free throws in the first overtime period and three of eight in the second. For the game, the Quakers made 36 of 50 attempts. Delaware made 29 of 42, including 11 of 20 in the two overtimes combined.

"We've just got to step up and hit them," Miller said of his team's free-throw shooting. "It's great to get to the line 50 times, but you've got to hit shots."

Delaware coach Monte Ross, a former assistant at St. Joe's, was in a better mood.

"I've been in so many battles in this building, it brought back some really fond memories," he said. "I was shocked that the three-pointer at the end didn't go in, because that's how so many games in this building go. It's the ghosts of the Palestra or something."
