College Basketball: Dayton gets by Georgia Tech, 63-59

Paul Williams hit the go-ahead three-pointer and went 4 for 4 from the free-throw line in the last minute to seal No. 18 Dayton's 63-59 comeback win over No. 21 Georgia Tech in the opener of the Puerto Rico Tipoff in San Juan yesterday.

Williams finished with 13 points for Dayton (2-0), which got 47 points from its backups, including 19 from Chris Johnson,, who shot 4 for 8 from behind the three-point line.

 

The Flyers had 22 turnovers but scored 27 points off 26 turnovers by the Yellow Jackets (1-1).

Syracuse 95, California 73 - Scoop Jardine scored 22 points and the Orange (3-0) raced past the No. 13 Golden Bears (2-1) in the early semifinal of the Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic in New York.

Wes Johnson added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Orange, who made Madison Square Garden feel like home.

Cal's Jerome Randle finished with 25 points.

North Carolina 77, Ohio State 73 - Deon Thompson had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and the No. 6 Tar Heels (4-0) managed to hold on for a win over the No. 15 Buckeyes (2-1) in the late semifinal of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in New York.

The Tar Heels, who led by 19 points with 10 minutes, 23 seconds to play, will face Syracuse in tonight's championship game.

Kentucky 102, Sam Houston State 92 - DeMarcus Cousins had 27 points and 18 rebounds to help the No. 4 Wildcats (3-0) outlast the Bearkats (2-1) in Lexington, Ky.

Patrick Patterson had 20 points and nine boards and John Wall added 21 points and six assists as the Wildcats overcame a record-setting shooting performance by Sam Houston State. The Bearkats' Corey Allmond poured in 37 points and made a Rupp Arena record 11 treys.

Kansas 94, Central Arkansas 44 - Tyrel Reed hit four three-pointers, and the top-ranked Jayhawks (3-0) scored 23 straight points in the first half to overwhelm the Bears (1-2) in Lawrence, Kan.

Minnesota 76, Utah Valley 51 - Freshman Rodney Williams had 17 points, six rebounds and four steals to help the 24th-ranked Golden Gophers (3-0) pull away from the Wolverines (1-2) in the second half for a victory in Minneapolis.

 

Women

Notre Dame 68, Michigan State 67 - Ashley Barlow scored 18 points and hit a tiebreaking free throw with 10 seconds left, lifting the No. 5 Fighting Irish (2-0) to victory over the No. 21 Spartans (1-2) in East Lansing, Mich.

Elsewhere: Samantha Prahalis had 14 points as No. 3 Ohio State (3-0) notched a 92-69 win over West Virginia (2-1) in the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT in Columbus, Ohio. . . . Jasmine Thomas scored 12 points to lead No. 11 Duke (2-1) to an easy win in its home opener with a 69-42 rout of Georgia Southern (1-1) in Durham, N.C. . . . Becca Tobin scored 14 points and No. 14 Arizona State (2-0) held Yale (2-1) scoreless for more than nine minutes in the first half en route to an 82-46 victory in New Haven, Conn. . . . Jasmine James scored 25 points and Ashley Houts added 21 for No. 16 Georgia (2-0) in a 74-57 win over host Chattanooga (1-2).
