Dick Jerardi: D.J.'s spin on the NBA draft
Dick Jerardi: D.J.'s spin on the NBA draft
The second generation
The first 15 picks included sons of three NBA players - Stephen Curry, son of Dell, Gerald Henderson, son of Gerald, and Austin Daye, son of Darren.
Agree with Dickie V
My man Dick Vitale said on ESPN that Stephen Curry is going to be a star and Rookie of the Year. And he might be right. He is definitely going to put up big numbers.
What happened to the seniors?
There were exactly two seniors selected in the first 19 picks - Louisville's Terrence Williams (New Jersey) and North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough (Indiana).
Williams is the most versatile player in the draft who picked a terrible time to play terribly - the regional-final loss to Michigan State.
Hansbrough is a tribute to perseverance. He made a great choice to stay in college. It got him a much-deserved national championship.
Better in hoops than soccer?
There were more players (two) from Spain selected in the first round than from the Big Ten and SEC combined (one). The Big Ten was very young, including Ohio State's freshman big man B.J. Mullens (taken by Dallas with the 24th pick and then traded to Oklahoma City). The SEC was bad.
No surprise
The Big East had two teams in the Final Four and four in the Elite Eight. The ACC won the national championship. The Pac-10 always has great athletes.
Seventeen of the 30 first-round picks were from those three conferences - seven from the ACC, six from the Pac-10 and four from the Big East.
No love for Pittsburgh
