Michigan used a favorable current Saturday to win the school's second Richard O'Brien Trophy and end a 2-year run by Big Ten rival Purdue at the 71st Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River.

The Wolverines won the men's varsity heavyweight 8 in 5:54.4 and tied with Delaware for most points in the men's races with 20. Purdue, which won in 2007 and '08, came in second in 5:57.694.

Temple's varsity heavyweight 8 finished third in its morning semifinal, but only the top two boats qualified.

The Saint Joseph's men's lightweight 8 took third. The Hawks finished behind Delaware and Georgia Tech. SJU's lightweight 4 finished sixth in the final. Before the morning's races, the Hawks dedicated a boat to the memory of 2005 graduate Matt Mullin, who died a few weeks ago in a boating accident. His parents and brother were on hand to christen the boat.

Drexel had a strong showing, sending seven boats to the semifinals with five of the seven reaching the grand finals in the men's and women's divisions.

In the women's division, Grand Valley won its first Evelyn Bergman Trophy in 6:41.2. Buffalo and Saint Joseph's finished second and third, respectively. *
